We stopped in Quebec city the first night and stayed at this hostel. We were right in the middle of the city's big summer festival, and it was a busy neighbourhood. That meant not a lot of sleep!
It was extremely hot that weekend. We did a walking tour and saw a lot of the old cityWe happened to catch three great street performers that did half hour shows. It was a lot of fun to watch!
I really enjoyed this group that did traditional Quebecois songs - complete with fiddle, tin whistle, spoons, and foot stomping.
We took the ferry from Nova Scotia to PEI. This was our first view of the island - the red sand showed up so vividly against the blue of the ocean and sky.
This is the beach right out front of our little cottage.
Singing Sands beach- when you walked on the sand it made a "zipping" or "squeaking" sound because of its' high silica content. Fun to walk on!
The sunset from the front porch of our cottage
We spent the day in "Avonlea" - the fictional town created from Anne of Green Gables. There was houses, stores, a play area (here there's a professional sand castle builder) and actors that wandered around the village, interacting with us and eachother.
We got to dress up in clothes from that time period and pose for photos having "tea."
There were skits throughout the day - stories from the book being acted out.
One of the best parts in the village was this band that played traditional island music - they were great!
We had a ride on this horse-drawn buggy.
There was a pig race at the end of the day...
And a school concert put on by Josie, Anne, Gilbert, Moody, Diana and Charlie.
In Charlottetown, we caught this free outdoor performance of different traditional dances from different ethnic groups - it was really well done!
We had to have some fresh seafood on the island, so we went to this little diner that was featured on the Food Network's show "You GOTTA Eat Here!" It was a tiny little place, but had some great food!
Mom even had some clam chowder! She ate seafood!
Just down the road from our cottage was a nice little scenic drive that went past this lighthouse and along the ocean. Just beautiful!
The red sand kind of clashed with my pink nail polish...
There was a nice musical group set up on the street in Charlottetown. Buskers were everywhere! Love it!
Jenn & I went to swim at a beach. We found this neat beach that had all kinds of sandbars and really emphasized the tide going in and out. We were able to walk out as far as that land there in the distance, and it didn't get past our waist! When we came back, the tide had almost taken our sandals away!
You can see the tide pools here
On the way home we stopped in the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick for some whale watching. Unfortunately it got so foggy and we couldn't see much of the surrounding areas. We were able to see a few whales though, since we were on one of those zodiac boats - right on the water. It was a great experience!
The boat captain brought us to this tiny island that was covered in seals. Must have been a hundred or so! He added an extra 10 minutes to the tour just to get us to see them.
It was a fun trip, and we all had a great time!
